BRIDGETON, Mo. (KMOX) – Saying the status quo isn’t working, a group of nuns wants Congress to authorize a total cleanup of radioactive material at the West Lake Landfill in Bridgeton.
The Franciscan Sisters of Mary are lobbying the Missouri Congressional delegation — McCaskill, Blunt, Clay and Wagner — to transfer authority for the site from the EPA to the Army Corps of Engineers. Spokeswoman Sandy Ashby says the suspense of living near a landfill fire moving toward nuclear material is unacceptable.
“That landfill fire they’re finding that it may well be closer to the radioactivity than they expect and they don’t know what will happen when it reaches that radioactive waste but the dread is incredible,” says Ashby.
Fifteen nuns held a prayer vigil at the site, tying colored ribbons to the landfill fence as a reminder of their intentions.
