A fire at the Bridgeton Landfill on Sunday and the ongoing battle to keep a separate, underground fire from reaching radioactive waste at an adjoining site have so unsettled nearby residents that they are raising money for their own radiation monitors and calling for renewed government attention.
Representatives from landfill owner Republic Services, the Pattonville Fire Protection District and the county’s emergency communications team will meet next week to discuss Sunday’s surface fire and to review an emergency and evacuation plan for nearby residents, county spokeswoman Pat Washington said Tuesday.
A Republic spokesman said the company is cooperating with state and local authorities. Continue —>>>
